Sump

Recommended Posts

i hv a 3ft tank currently, but i realised its really difficult to fit all my equipment inside, so im tinking of getting a sump..

the idea is that my fren can diy the piping for me in just 10 min, then it flows down to a normal tank at the bottom..

then instead of having mulitple compartments, i just place a box inside and the return pump in the box(water overflows into the box)

this way, we can avoid the main tank overflowing if anything screws up(the whole point of compartments rite?) yet its much cheaper and quite easy to maintain..

but i realised 1 prob..

if i hv a 3ft tank, its quite natural that i would hv a 2ft sump rite?

but inc a box, return pump(eheim1260), my skimmer(weipro 2017) and the pump for the skimmer(dymax 5000l/hr), i tink even a 2ft tank wont even hv space..

and wad abt other stuff i might wanna put in?

so do i go for a 3ft tank?

its substantially more expensive, and it seems rather silly to hv a sump as big as the main tank..

btw, im looking for a tank as my sump, anyone got cheap or even better, free one?

last time gave away 1 3ft tank, now realised i need it again..

Sorry i'm not using a sump but would just like to give some comments?

IMO, the purpose of your sump here is just to house additional equipments like skimmer and pumps, and with the return generating water circulation in main tank as well?

I believe most of the other bros here use sump as a means of bio and mechanical filtration with filter media, refugium etc. as well as to place additional items..

So in comes the role of the compartments to separate the various sections

Correct me if i'm wrong.. just my 0.02 cents

look at my thread.

http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.php?...topic=40282&hl=

I have a 2ft sump and a 2ft tank, it works fine for me.

and then there is this guy

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthre...threadid=553708

a small pico tank with a large cansister (sump)

so it is okay if you have a sump larger than your tank. :P

the point of the sump for me is too add additional water volume and hold my equipment, but also even without compartments, additiional biological and mechanical filtration can be acchieved by simply putting more LR there and using baskets to hold the filter wool..

btw, im not intending to hv any filter wool in the first place..

the issue is that if i use a 2ft sump, it will be too small to hold anything other than the pumps and skimmer..

if i get a 3ft tank then i will put other stuff in the extra space..

ok, i found a 3ft tank liao, a really nice guy i giving me free..

so i guess i shall get 3ft tank..

altho my mother will be an obstacle..

since getting my 6ft FW tank, i was banned from expanding and was supposed to sell off all my tanks..

this current 3ft tank that im setting up marine in is already "illegal"..

she will see it as an expansion, altho im just putting it at the 2nd tier..
