Refugium users, come share your story...

just want to start a thread where all the refugium users can come share about their setup of their refugium. (type of macroalgae, type of lights,light period, size of refugium, size of tank)

and how it has helped, and how it sucked, or stuff like that. =) refugium users, please contribute. so that next time people dun need to keep starting threads to ask on how to set up, or what are the benefits, or drawbacks.

Type of lights: Personally using PL lights. Although T5 wld be better, also know pple who use 150watt MH for refugim.

Photo period: 7 pm to 7 am.

Size of tank : 3x2x2.5 ft

Size of refugim: approx 1 ft by 1 ft.

Refugims help to cultivate copepods and brittle stars.

my fuge is damn small.. abt 12" x 9" only... has a DSB (bad move) and some small leafed calpura inside it.

So far the calpura has been thriving which means it's removing some excess nutrients from the water coloumn, so that's good..

Other than that I think it does clog up a little with deitrus... i THINK i have a bristle star in there but seriously.. I can't see anythign anymore coz the glass has a thick layer of coraline algae...

ive a 20g high tank/refug of 3 years, it has 5" DSB (wrong move...too) and macroalgae on 24/7 36w PL light.

the substrate consist of C3 / C1 sand + miracle mud .. top layer still looks "muddy" after 3 years of coexistence.

It has been my ONLY filter (other than liverock) for my 2 years ago reef setup, have added remora skimmer recently for my current puffer fishes tank.

i do have lots of bristle worms and copepod. Did a test recently by dropping flake food and poof!.. they're ready for canning..hrhrhr .. j/k

i do not see anything sux with having a refug, but it really depends on what u're trying to achieve, it works great as a filter for reef only setup, but not really for high bioload fishes setup.

somebody : because i cannot effectively get the waste generated in maintank to the tank with DSB, and the footprint size of the 20g high tank is too small for effective DSB.

My fuge is a 3.5ft tank with dual lane racecourse design

Basically it acts as my macroalgae growout and frag tank

DSBs are great if you know how to maintain them

I'll go back to a DSB once I find the time to start my culture of infauna again

The term "refugium" is actually to describe a place where there are no predators unlike the main system.

If you are talking about sumps, there are many designs and each serve its own function. We have macroalgae, DSB, equipment, water reservoir to name a few.

My fuge only has chaeto in it for nutrient export.

Whether macroalgae needs a sandbed or not depends on the type of macroalgae you are using.

Red bamboo IMO do not grow fast enough for efficient nutrient intake

you do NOT need to have a DSB for it... all you need is something (eggcrate + PVC pipes) for it to cling onto in case it gets washed away and sucked up by your pump...

I have a tiny refugium away from my main tank (12x7x7 "), some live rock with caulerpa, and some other kind of green. I put in plenty of phyto plankton.

No live stock in it now, used to have a chocolate tip star and a snail, mati already.

Just a normal desk lamp and 2 air balls to circulate the water.

I can see pods in the tank, but I still figuring how to get them into my main tank for my mandarin.
