Drilling Hole In Wall

Hi, I need to drill/make a hole through a 6" thick concrete (or brick) wall. Hole size probably about 2" to 3" diameter. This is for my chiller in/out hose to go through.

Do you have any suggestions how I could do this myself?

Or, do you have recommendations who I could engage to do this at a reasonable fee?

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

wat wall brick or column

if you want i can core for you.

but ........

Hi seareefer, it's not a main column supporting wall. Not sure it is brick inside.

You said "but ...". Can you elaborate?

I have regular Borch hammer drill with masonary drill bit - 1/4" size I think.

if it's brick, best to get it done by a pro who would seal up the hole propely.. non-loadbearing walls, if made of brick in old houses or in renovated flats generally use frog bricks so if water goes in the the frog in the brick, it would eventually weaken the clay and then your wall would start to develop hairline cracks.. only a certain area would be affected though because motar is rather waterproof but if it's a wall badly done then u might have to rip up the whole wall.. ;)

2 cents only.... :peace:

no problem ;)

but if it's made of concrete, you can drill it yourself without much complications.. just make sure it's a non-loadbearing wall if not, in the midst of drilling you might come across multiple reinforcement bars.. :peace:

You will need a hammer drill with chiselling function. If not available in your drill, better do not try. See chisel bits to use. Also better use drills with SDS slots, not the socket tighten type as they will get loose very fast.

Hi weisoon, thanks for the advise. I'm sure my drill has the hammer function. What is the chisel function? Do you mean it can hammer without rotating?

I'm also not sure what are SDS slots. My drill grips the drill bit with a set of jaw that I tighten with a turn-key. Is this the so-called socket type?

Thanks again.

For better/more expensive drills, they have selectable functions. Hammer, Hammer+chisel, chisel. Basically just the way the drill works. SDS slots are quick disconnect slots used in the industry for quick changing of bits and also provide stronger 'griping' of the bits. Yours is a normal socket type. So quite sure there are no chisel function.

Thank you all for your comments and advise.

I tried asking a couple of contractors around my area but they are not interested to take on the job.

Too bad, I have to get it done myself.

Bought some tools for the job:

- Long drill bit = $15

- Short drill bit = $10

- Pointed chisel = $4

- Flat-head chisel = $5

The rest of the stuff I already have.

The PVC diameter is about 2.25".

The hole is 6" deep.

Total time taken about 4 hours. Very, very tiring. :(

Now I'm waiting for the putty to dry before I apply a second layer.

Then I'll paint it over when it is thoroughly dry.

Here are some pictures.
